We decided that our first major outing in El Chaltén would be a five day trek through the Fitz Roy Range. It didn’t take long to gather our team (Christina, Phillip, Alice, and Holy), resupply our fuel and food, and map out our route.
A five day, four night adventure was planned. The first day had us basking in the sun, with a simple 3 hour trek to Campo de Agostini. This cozy little campground was stationed between Lago Torre and the Rio Fitz Roy, with amazing views of Cerro Torre just beyond the lake.
We crawled out of our tents around 6 am to watch the sunrise on Cerro Torre. The clouds decided to hug the mountain that morning, but it was still worth the view.
A nap and some muesli, then back on the trail to Poincenot.
Fitz also had some morning cover, but we knew we would get another shot at it in a few days time.
We hike a little slow from time to time. I blame all the awesome side trips that we do. For example the excursion to Glacier Piedras Blanca.
We camped the night at Piedra del Fraile. It was a quiet, private campground on the Rio Electrico. I got out of bed early while everyone else was sleeping to sneak into the building and buy a cup of coffee. It was brilliant! Then we went back to Poincenot for the night.
And this is why we came down here…
These mountains are absolutely superb!
Amazing!!!
The pics look awesome. I’m sure it’s even better in person. I ran into your dad in soldotna a couple weeks ago. He told me you were down there. My wife and I are planning a trip there hopefully soon.
Hey, good to hear from you. This area is absolutely beautiful. Let me know if you decide to travel down here and if you want some help deciding where to go I’ll gladly help you out. If not, we should still get a beer…
